A funding round closes at a $965 billion valuation with a confidential IPO filing
Business · May 18–24, 2026

Anthropic announced the closing of a financing round at a $965 billion valuation, surpassing its competitor, and said it had confidentially filed for a public offering.

A private company valuation is an estimate negotiated between investors and recipients, so it deserves reading with reservation. What it does report precisely is something else: how much capital the market was willing to commit at that moment, and on what terms.

The move toward listing, made almost simultaneously by the sector's two largest companies, has a structural explanation. Anyone needing to commit hundreds of billions to infrastructure can't sustain that on private rounds alone.

Going public changes the nature of information available to the whole market. A public company publishes numbers, and data that is estimated today, like the cost of serving a model and revenue per customer, becomes verifiable by anyone.

For anyone buying services from these companies, the relevant change is pressure. A public company answers to shareholders quarter by quarter, and that cadence tends to be incompatible with investment that only returns over years.
