Moonshot AI launched the Kimi K3 API on July 16, announcing it would publish the model's weights eleven days later.

The sequence is a commercial choice. Shipping paid access first gives time for the model to be measured and compared through traditional channels, with the trade press treating it as a product. The weights follow once the comparison has been published.

For anyone building a product, a competitive model with published weights changes the dependency calculation. It removes the situation where the only alternative to an expensive vendor is another expensive vendor.

The market effect showed up in reporting from the period, with estimates of a sharp drop in the valuations of American frontier companies. Private valuation figures are estimates, but the direction is consistent with what a free quality floor does to pricing power.

The long-term consequence concerns where margin sits. If the model becomes an ordinary commodity, value migrates to whoever operates, integrates and answers for the result, rather than to whoever serves the model.
