Meta announced it will open the weights of its latest AI model, letting anyone download and run the system themselves. The announcement came from Mark Zuckerberg, in a video posted to one of the company's own networks.
Weights are the values that determine how a model behaves. Opening them means the system stops depending on the service of the company that made it: whoever downloads it can run it on their own hardware, tune it and integrate it without asking permission or paying per call.
The move is plainly aimed at competitors charging for access to closed models. If an open model delivers comparable quality, the case for selling access by subscription weakens, and the comparison shifts to the cost of running it yourself versus the convenience of outsourcing.
In the same announcement, the company disclosed a billion-dollar fund for communities where it owns and operates data centres. One of them, in Louisiana, hosts a build that may exceed $250 billion in total cost.
That data centre figure sitting next to the open weights describes the strategy well: the model is given away, and the contest is over the infrastructure it runs on and the position of whoever sets the standard the rest of the market follows.
