Anthropic develops FlashProve to verify which model generated an output

Anthropic is preparing an open-source system to confirm which AI model produced a given response, even against attempts by the lab itself to disguise one model as another. The proposal aims to stop a model from being passed off as a different one.

Anthropic published on its blog on Tuesday a description of an open-source system called FlashProve, designed to verify which AI model generated a given output. According to TechCrunch, the mechanism works in a way similar to the cryptographic signatures used in email, which let the recipient confirm where a message came from.

The source says the system would hold up against impostors trying to pass one model off as another, even when the impostor is the lab that built and runs the model. That point is the proposal's declared differentiator: trust rests on verification, not just on the word of whoever serves the model.

Researchers, according to TechCrunch, argue that FlashProve could prevent an AI company from quietly swapping one model for another without the customer noticing. For those who consume third-party APIs, this addresses a concrete problem: the version being served can change without notice, altering cost, behavior and quality.

The collected material does not say how mature FlashProve is, which models are already supported, or how the verification fits into current inference workflows. Without those details, it cannot be claimed that the tool is available for production use.

This paper's view is that traceability of the model that answers should become a contractual requirement, not a favor from the provider. Teams that depend on auditable responses should record the model version in every call and demand identity guarantees from their vendors while solutions like this remain unproven.
