A customer who migrates out of necessity rarely returns
The week showed the second act of a story that began with two frontier models pulled by government decision. Past the initial shock, what surfaced was the commercial cost: the company admitted serving essentially no traffic from that model, and a large institutional buyer began evaluating competitors to replace it in sensitive systems.
That's the part usually missed in availability discussions. A customer who has to deliver doesn't wait: they adapt their code for another supplier, and once adapted, the cost of switching back belongs to them, not to the original supplier.
On the other side, corporate products launched the same week shipped supporting models from three different companies. That isn't technical generosity, it's market reading: tying a system to one supplier became a hard decision to defend to customers.
It's the second-source lesson, learned by component manufacturing decades ago, arriving in software: keeping a qualified alternative costs a little every month and prevents stopping when the preferred one fails.
