Rocket Lab agreed to acquire Iridium in a cash-and-stock deal valued at roughly $8 billion, a move taking the company beyond launch services toward satellite communications.

The logic of the purchase is margin. Launch is a project business, with revenue concentrated in events and price under competitive pressure. Operating a communications constellation is recurring revenue with long-term contracts.

The move fits a trend appearing elsewhere in the period: space infrastructure treated as part of computing infrastructure, with proposals to use satellites as platforms for processing and transmitting data.

For anyone operating systems on the ground, the interest is indirect and concrete: satellite connectivity entered the list of alternatives for places where terrestrial networks don't reach or can't be trusted, and consolidation in that market affects price and availability.

The usual caveat about consolidation applies: fewer independent operators means fewer second-source options.
