GM redesigns OnStar with new electric architecture and on-board AI

GM redesigns vehicle computing architecture to integrate AI into OnStar; overhaul includes process centralization and replacing brand apps with a single one.

GM redesigns OnStar with new electric architecture and on-board AI
Hardware · October 19-23, 2026

General Motors announced a deep overhaul of OnStar, its vehicle assistance system, which now incorporates artificial intelligence. The change is not just software: GM redesigned the electrical and centralized computing architecture of vehicles to support new AI capabilities, according to the company. The new OnStar mobile app will replace both OnStar Guardian, launched in 2020, and the specific apps for each group brand, such as Buick.

The decision comes in response to pressure from Chinese automakers, which already integrate technology into the core of the vehicle rather than treating it as an accessory. GM has adopted in-house AI development tools and designed an electrical architecture that centralizes processing, allowing software updates to change car behavior more broadly.

Centralizing computing in vehicles is an industry trend, but each manufacturer has implemented it at its own pace. GM now joins Tesla and Chinese automakers in adopting an architecture that treats the car as a device on wheels, rather than as a collection of independent electronic modules.

For fleet operators and companies that maintain telemetry systems or apps connected to GM vehicles, the change means integration with a single API and app instead of multiple brand apps. The publication assesses that architecture consolidation is an expected move, but the full redesign of electrical hardware to enable AI shows GM is treating software as a platform, not as a layer on top of the existing car.

Teams dealing with vehicle connectivity should prepare to migrate integrations from old apps to the new OnStar, as well as test the new communication architecture with on-board computing centralization.
